How to Check Tire Pressure
Think of your tires like you think of your shoes: When they’re brand new, they have plenty of tread and are comfortable, right? It’s the same with your tires. When you first start driving your vehicle around the Atlantic City and Egg Harbor areas, they’re usually inflated to the ideal amount.
However, over time, just like with your shoes’ tread, the pressure in your tires may fall to an undesirable amount. While your vehicle’s tire pressure monitor may tell you when the pressure is low, it may not be able to tell you what that pressure is, meaning you’ll need to be able to check the tire pressure yourself. At Boardwalk Honda, we’re going to help with that. Read on, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!
A Step-By-Step Guide to Checking Tire Pressure
Even if you consider yourself a novice at checking tire pressure, we’re here to help with this step-by-step instruction guide that will turn you into a pro in no time! Just follow these steps:
- Remove the valve cap, or the small, rounded cap covering the part sticking out of your tires.
- Grab your tire pressure gauge and push down on the valve stem. If your gauge is properly attached, you’ll no longer hear the hiss of air being released from your tires.
- This next step will depend on the type of gauge you’re using. If you have a manual gauge, the right coupling with the valve will cause the release of a numbered stick from the end of your gauge. Check the number where the extended end stopped-that’s your current tire pressure.
- However, if you’re using a digital gauge, the number on the read-out is your pressure. It will be presented as a two-digit number which represents the PSI-or pounds per square inch-of air in your tire.
- If either of these numbers are below the desired PSI, you’re going to want to fill your tires with air. Keep the gauge handy to ensure you’re inflating properly.
Where to Locate Your Desired Tire Pressure
If you don’t know your proper tire pressure, there are several places to check on your vehicle. The first location is a sticker inside the driver’s-side door at seat level. On that sticker will be a plethora of information, but you’re simply looking for a two-digit number that usually says something about the manufacturer’s recommendation. This is your desired tire pressure.
This number can also be located by perusing your owner’s manual or taking a look at your tires themselves, as they will show you a maximum PSI. Additionally, it’s always best to measure your tire pressure with cold tires, so be sure to keep that in mind when you’re inflating.
