How Long Do Tires Last

Tires2

Do you know how long your tires last and when they should be replaced? In order to give our fellow Atlantic City and Egg Harbor drivers a clear picture of the recommended tire lifespan, the service team here at Boardwalk Honda has come up with this guide. It’ll cover how long tires generally last, factors that effect tire longevity, and what to look for in order to keep your tires in the best condition for as long as possible.

Your Tire’s Lifespan

A tire can go anywhere between five and ten years. Precisely how long tires last depends on many factors that affect every tire differently. Here are some of the main things that influence a tire’s lifespan:

  • The quality of the individual tire
  • Climate
  • Road conditions

Driving Behavior

The way you drive also has a lot to do with how long your tires last. For instance, if you find that you often get going too quickly from a parked or stopped position, have frequent abrupt stops, or generally drive a bit on the fast side, you’ll likely observe that your tires will wear down much faster.

Take a Quick Look at Your Tires

To keep track of their wear and tear, we recommend you take some time to perform a regular inspection of your tires. Depending on what you prefer, this could be at the beginning or end of the day or even when you have a few minutes to spare during your lunch break. Here’s what you’ll be checking:

  • Uneven wear on your tires:If you’re noticing that your tires are wearing unevenly, it could be time to have them rotated. This does a lot to help your tires last longer because it allows the wear and tear to occur more gradually over the entire surface of the tire.
  • Swelling:If there is any swelling on your tires, have the tire or tires replaced immediately.
  • Cracking:Your tires should also be replaced if you see cracks.
  • Separating:Stop driving on your tires if one or more is beginning to separate and come apart.
  • Air pressure: Air pressure greatly impacts a tire’s lifespan. If there’s not enough air in a tire, premature wear will show up on the outer edges of the tread. If there’s too much air, the middle of the tread will start to age prematurely. Because air pressure has such an impact on the condition of your tires, it should be checked at least once a month.

Worn Tires

Here are some of the dangers that can arise if you continuously drive on older tires or the above warning signs go unnoticed for too long:

  • Weakness:Perforations and blowouts have a much higher probability of occurring when tires are worn down far enough.
  • Less Control:Worn tread results in loss of traction which can cause slipping and hydroplaning.
  • Overheating:Tiretread stores the cool air that keeps the rest of the tire from overheating. If tread is too worn down, this can’t happen. Overheating can result in a blowout.
